Why so many places demand a square
Cropped, not squashed
This takes a centred square out of the image. It does not stretch the picture into a square frame, which is the other way of getting to 1:1 and the one that makes everyone look wider than they are.
The long sides go
A 16:9 photo loses roughly a third of its width. Whatever matters has to be near the centre — check the edges before you commit, especially on a group photo where someone is standing at the end.
Why platforms want it
Square is the only ratio that renders identically in a grid, a list and a circular mask. That is why profile pictures, product thumbnails and post previews converge on it: one asset that cannot break any of the three layouts.
No quality cost
Cropping selects existing pixels, so the square is exactly as sharp as the source. Resize afterwards if the platform also specifies dimensions.
