How chroma keying actually works
Why green and blue specifically
Human skin contains almost no green or strong blue, so those hues are the furthest from a subject in colour terms. That gap is the whole trick: it lets a machine separate foreground from background by colour alone with very little risk of eating the person.
A lit screen is never one value
Real screens have hot spots, falloff at the edges, and shadow where the subject blocks the light. That is why the tolerance starts at 45 rather than the 20 a flat graphic needs — you are matching a range of greens, not one.
Green spill on the subject
Light bouncing off the screen tints hair, shoulders and light clothing green. A tolerance high enough to clear the screen will start eating those edges. If you see the subject dissolving before the screen is gone, the original lighting is the problem and no key setting will fully rescue it.
Avoid green in the frame
Anything green on the subject disappears with the background. That is the classic reason a presenter never wears green in front of a green screen — and if the wardrobe is green, switch to a blue screen instead.
Stills only, and PNG out
This works on single images rather than video. The output is PNG because transparency needs an alpha channel, and re-saving as JPG would fill the keyed area back in with white.
