What flipping left-to-right actually changes
A reflection, not a rotation
A horizontal flip reflects every pixel across the vertical centre line. Rotating 180 degrees is a different operation that also turns the image upside down. If your subject ends up on the wrong side but the right way up, a flip is what you wanted.
Facing into the layout
A person or animal looking off the edge of a page pulls the reader with them. Flipping so the subject faces inward keeps attention on the copy beside it. This is the single most common reason a designer flips a photograph.
Watch for text and faces
Anything with writing in it — a sign, a label, a jersey number — becomes unreadable when flipped. Faces are subtler: most are slightly asymmetric, so a flipped portrait of someone familiar reads as faintly wrong even when nobody can say why.
Lossless by construction
Flipping only reorders existing pixels. No resampling, no interpolation, no quality cost, and flipping twice returns the exact original file. That is not true of rotation at an arbitrary angle.
Transparency comes through untouched
A knocked-out PNG stays knocked out. The alpha channel is reflected along with the colour channels, so a transparent logo flips without picking up a background.
Before you flip
Check for embedded text
Signs, labels, jersey numbers and watermarks all read backwards after a flip. If any of those matter, crop them out or pick a different image.
Flip, then crop
Flipping first and cropping second lets you compose against the final orientation. Doing it the other way round usually means cropping twice.
Two flips is a no-op
Because nothing is resampled, flipping twice returns the identical file. Use that to check you have not accidentally flipped an asset already.
