Designing a Story Is Different From a Post
The whole phone is your canvas
A story fills the screen edge to edge at 9:16, so there is no feed around it competing for attention. That also means there is nowhere for a weak layout to hide.
Respect the safe zone
Your profile name and progress bar sit across the top, and the reply field and buttons cover the bottom. Keep text and logos out of roughly the top and bottom 250px of the 1920px height.
Read in seconds
A photo story shows for about five seconds before moving on. Templates such as Sale Badge and Event Night put one idea in large type so it is read before the tap.
Room for stickers
Polls, links, and countdowns are added inside Instagram after upload. Leave a clear area in your design where you plan to place them so they do not cover the headline.
Instagram Story Layout Zones
Full Story Canvas
1080 × 1920
The size the app exports and Instagram displays.
Central Safe Area
1080 × 1420
The space left after roughly 250px at the top and bottom.
Highlight Cover Crop
1080 × 1080
Saved highlights use a circular crop of the centre.
How to Make an Instagram Story
Open the story templates
The button opens Create on Instagram Story templates at 1080×1920. Choose one, or start from Blank.
Change the content
Retype the text, replace the photo with your own, and adjust the colours. Every element is a layer you can select and edit.
Keep it in the safe zone
Drag headlines and logos toward the middle of the frame and leave a gap for any sticker you will add in Instagram.
Download and post
Check a free low-resolution preview, export the full-resolution story, and upload it from your phone.

New Post Alerts
Point followers to your latest feed post or reel.

A designed frame with space for Instagram's countdown sticker.
Highlights Content

Or just ask
Describe the edit in your own words
Type what you want changed and the assistant does it on the canvas — each step lands as a layer you can reopen, so nothing it does is baked in.
