Getting a seal tight to its impression
Digitised seals arrive loose
A stamp captured from a page nearly always comes with a band of empty space around it — whatever was left after the crop. That space makes the seal render smaller than expected in any fixed box, because the container is sizing the margin rather than the ink.
A higher tolerance than most
The default here is 12 rather than the 5 the generic trim uses, because a digitised impression brings paper texture and scan noise with it. Too low and speckle in the margin stops the trim from finding the real edge.
A little margin is kept back
This tool leaves 8 pixels by default rather than cropping flush. A seal cropped exactly to the ink looks cramped, and the rim of a circular stamp needs somewhere to sit before it meets a border.
Works on transparent and on paper
If the seal is already knocked out, transparency is what gets trimmed. If it still sits on white paper, the paper is what gets trimmed. Either way you end up tight to the impression.
Order matters
Remove the background first, then trim. Trimming a seal that still has paper behind it works, but any shadow or gradient in that paper stops the tool finding a clean edge.
