What happens to a logo on the way to JPG
JPG has no transparency
This is the whole story of the conversion. A JPG cannot store an alpha channel, so every transparent pixel has to become an opaque one. The only question is which colour it becomes — which is why this page gives you a background control rather than silently defaulting to white.
Pick the background before you convert
Set the background to match wherever the logo will sit. White for a document or a marketplace listing, your brand colour for a slide deck, black for a dark template. Getting it wrong leaves a visible rectangle around the mark.
Quality, and where to stop
The slider maps to the JPEG encoder directly. Above about 90 the file grows fast for changes nobody sees; below about 70 the ringing around hard logo edges becomes obvious. Logos suffer from JPEG compression more than photographs because they are mostly flat colour and sharp boundaries.
Why anything still asks for JPG
Print submission portals, older CRMs, some ad networks and a lot of ERP and invoicing software accept JPG only. It is rarely the better format for a logo — it is just the one the system on the other end will take.
Keep the PNG
This conversion is one-way. Once the transparency is flattened and the edges are compressed there is no route back, so archive the original PNG and treat the JPG as a delivery copy.
Getting a logo JPG right
Match the background exactly
If the JPG will sit on a coloured page, sample that colour and use it here. A white-flattened logo on a grey page shows a rectangle.
Do not go below 80
JPEG artefacts cluster around the hard edges logos are made of. Below about 80 the halos become visible at normal viewing size.
The PNG is the master
Treat every JPG as a delivery copy for one destination. Archive the transparent PNG and re-export from it.
