When turning an image upside down is the right answer
Reflected, not rotated
A vertical flip reflects across the horizontal centre line. The top becomes the bottom, but left stays left. Rotating 180 degrees would also swap the sides — which is why an upside-down scan usually needs the rotation, not this.
The reflection trick
Duplicate a photograph, flip the copy vertically, stack it underneath and fade it out. That is the entire recipe for the water-reflection effect, and it is why this operation shows up far more often in design work than in photo correction.
Seamless tiling
Mirroring a texture vertically makes the top and bottom edges match by definition, so a tiled background stops showing a hard seam. The pattern reads as symmetric rather than repeating, which is a fair trade for most backgrounds.
Not the same as rotating a scan
A document fed into the scanner the wrong way up needs a 180-degree rotation. Flipping it vertically leaves the text mirrored and unreadable. If the words come out backwards, you used the wrong tool.
Alpha is reflected too
Transparency is carried through the flip, so a cut-out subject stays cut out and can be stacked straight onto its own reflection.
