Why the file is a WebP
Saving an icon from a modern site or a design gallery usually gives you WebP, because that is what the server delivers. The format is fine; the tools you want to use it in are the constraint.
Transparency comes across
Both formats carry an alpha channel, so a cut-out glyph stays cut out. Nothing is flattened and no background appears.
Manifests will not take WebP
App store submissions, browser extension manifests and PWA icon declarations all specify PNG. This conversion is usually the last step before a submission rather than a design choice.
Lossy WebP stays lossy
If the source was compressed, the softening is already in the pixels and PNG stores it exactly. Converting stops further loss; it does not restore detail.
The file grows
PNG is lossless, so expect a larger file. At icon dimensions this is a few dozen kilobytes and never a real problem.
