Rec. 601 luma — the exact conversion the editor applies.
Why use this color tool
True luminance, not just desaturation
We map each pixel with the Rec. 601 luma weighting (30% red, 59% green, 11% blue), the same formula broadcast and print use. The result reads as a proper monochrome photo — reds and greens keep their relative tonal weight instead of flattening to identical grays.
Keeps transparency intact
Grayscale only touches colour, never the alpha channel. A transparent PNG logo stays transparent — only the visible pixels turn gray — so the output drops straight onto any background.
Instant and private
The conversion runs entirely in your browser on an HTML canvas. Nothing is uploaded to convert, so it is fast and your image never leaves your device for the preview.
How the luma math works
Human eyes are far more sensitive to green than to blue, so a flat average of the three channels would make greens look dull and blues too bright. The weighted luma formula corrects for that, giving each colour the perceived brightness it should have in gray.
Grayscale versus black and white
Grayscale keeps every shade between black and white, so gradients and soft shadows survive. Black and white snaps each pixel to one of two values with a threshold. Choose grayscale for photos and detail, black and white for stencils and hard-edged graphics.
How to convert image to grayscale
Upload your image
Drag and drop a PNG, JPG, WebP, or SVG, or click to browse your files. The original loads on the left so you can compare it side by side.
See the grayscale result instantly
The tool converts the moment your image loads — the gray version appears on the right automatically, with no slider to set and no button to press.
Download
Grab a free low-resolution preview to check the look, or download the full-resolution PNG with one credit. Transparency is preserved in the export.

UI & wireframes
Strip colour from screenshots and assets so a mockup reads by layout and hierarchy, not hue.
Photo mood
Give product shots or portraits a timeless monochrome look before posting to social or a portfolio.
Contrast checks
Preview how a design holds up for colour-blind viewers by removing hue entirely and judging tonal contrast.
