Recovering the colours from a logo
The guidelines are always missing
Someone always needs the brand hex codes and nobody can find the document. Reading them off the logo file is faster than chasing the agency that made it four years ago, and it is exact rather than eyeballed.
Tuned for flat marks
This runs in logo mode, which weights flat areas of uniform colour over photographic variation. A logo has a handful of deliberate colours rather than a continuous range, and reporting them as a short list is what makes the result usable.
Compression corrupts brand colours
A logo saved as JPEG picks up thousands of near-matches around every edge, and the extracted hex may be a pixel off the true brand value. Always extract from a PNG or SVG if one exists — the difference is invisible on screen and very visible in print.
Anti-aliased edges are not brand colours
The blended pixels along a curve are neither the mark nor the background. Grouping usually discards them, but if an unexpected in-between shade appears in the results, that is what it is.
Screen hex is not print colour
Extracted values are RGB. A print job needs CMYK or Pantone, and the conversion is not automatic — vivid screen colours frequently have no exact print equivalent. Treat the hex as the digital reference and get the print values from the brand owner.
