A luma threshold snaps every pixel to pure black or white.
Why use this color tool
A true two-tone threshold
Every pixel is measured for brightness and pushed to pure black or pure white at the midpoint — no grays. That is what separates real black and white from grayscale, and it is exactly what stencils, screen-print masks, and single-colour logos need.
Keeps transparency intact
Only the visible pixels are thresholded; the alpha channel is left alone, so a transparent PNG stays transparent and drops onto any background.
Instant and in-browser
The conversion runs on an HTML canvas on your device, so the preview is instant and your image never leaves your browser during editing.
How the threshold decides
Each pixel is first reduced to a single brightness value using luma weighting, then compared to the midpoint. Anything brighter becomes white and anything darker becomes black. The result is a clean two-value image with hard edges and no anti-aliased gray.
Black and white versus grayscale
Grayscale keeps hundreds of gray shades, so photos stay soft and detailed. A black-and-white threshold keeps only two values, which is ideal for cutting, printing, and tracing but can lose fine gradients. Choose based on whether you need detail or a hard-edged stencil.
