What a Good Passport Photo Looks Like
The same rules apply almost everywhere: a plain light background, your face square to the camera, a neutral expression and nothing edited.
OK pictures
Facing the camera, neutral face, mouth closed, plain light wall Long hair kept behind the shoulders and away from the eyes Beards are fine — the whole face from chin to crown is visible Glasses only where allowed, with no glare or tint (not for US passports)
Not OK pictures
A shadow on the wall behind you Head tilted to one side Smiling with your mouth open Glare on glasses hiding the eyes Too close — the top of the head is cut off A patterned or cluttered background Looking away from the camera Eyes closed or half closed Beauty filters, retouching or a pasted-in background
Illustrations. Every photo must also meet your document’s size and background rules.
What the Tool Does
Framed to the official measurements
Each document sets a photo size, a head height measured from chin to crown, and where your eyes should sit. The tool finds your face and crops to those numbers in millimetres, so the printed photo matches what the form asks for.
Only cropped, never retouched
Passport offices reject edited photos. The tool crops, scales and straightens by a few degrees, and changes nothing else: no background swap, no smoothing, no filters. When a check fails it tells you what to retake.
Checks before you print
Head size, eye line, tilt, facing the camera, expression, eyes open, background brightness, shadows behind you and print sharpness are checked on the spot, so a problem shows up before you pay a fee for a rejected application.
A print sheet and a digital file
You get a 600 dpi print sheet with as many copies as fit on 4×6 in or 10×15 cm paper, with cut marks, plus a digital file sized for online applications.
Where Home-Made Photos Are Not Accepted
Canada
Passport photos must be taken and printed by a commercial photographer, who stamps the back.
Australia
Inkjet-printed photos and edited photos are refused. Use a photo booth or a pharmacy service.
Germany
Passport and ID photos are digital only, taken at a certified studio or at the authority. Paper photos stopped being accepted at the end of July 2025.
UK online applications
Upload the uncropped original from your phone — the Passport Office crops it for you. The framed photo here is for paper forms.

How to Make a Passport Photo at Home
Take the photo
Stand about 50 cm in front of a plain, light wall in even daylight. Ask someone to take it at eye level, with space above your head and your shoulders in view. Glasses off, neutral face, mouth closed.
Upload it
Open the tool, choose your document and upload the original photo from your phone or camera — not a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app, which loses detail.
Check the framing
Your face is found automatically and the photo is cropped so your head and eyes land inside the official bands. Drag or zoom to fine-tune, and read the checklist: head size, eye line, tilt, background, expression and sharpness.
Download and print
Download the digital file and a print sheet with several copies. Print the sheet at 100% (actual size) on photo paper at home or at a photo kiosk, and cut along the marks.
Who It Is For
Renewing by post
