What a colour wheel is for
Every scheme is a shape on the wheel
Complementary is two points opposite, triadic is a triangle, tetradic is a rectangle, analogous is a short arc. Seeing the full wheel at your own saturation and lightness makes those relationships concrete rather than theoretical.
Segments are yours to choose
Twelve is the traditional artists wheel — three primaries, three secondaries, six tertiaries. Six is enough to reason about relationships quickly. Twenty-four gives fine gradations for picking a specific hue that sits between two named ones.
It follows your starting colour
Rather than a generic wheel at full saturation, every segment inherits the saturation and lightness of the colour you pick. A muted starting colour gives a muted wheel, which is far more useful when you are choosing within an existing palette.
The traditional wheel is not the digital one
The RYB wheel taught in art classes puts orange opposite blue. The RGB wheel screens actually use puts cyan opposite red. This generates the digital one, which is what your hex codes will do — worth knowing if the result contradicts what you were taught.
Hue distance is not visual weight
Evenly spaced hues do not appear evenly prominent. Yellows read as much lighter than blues at identical saturation and lightness, so a wheel of equal steps still needs adjustment before it becomes a working palette.
