Lifting an icon off its plate
Plates are usually one flat colour
Most icons ship on a solid tile — a rounded square, a circle, a coloured chip. That plate is a single flat value, which is the easiest possible case for colour matching and why this works in one pass.
Pick the plate, not white
The default is white, but if your icon sits on a brand-coloured chip, set the picker to that colour instead. Trying to remove a blue plate with white selected will do nothing at all.
When the glyph shares the plate colour
A white glyph on a coloured plate is straightforward. A white glyph on a white plate is impossible by colour alone — there is nothing to distinguish them. In that case you need the shape, not the colour, which means a different tool.
Rounded corners leave a fringe
A rounded plate is anti-aliased at its corners, so a ring of intermediate pixels survives a tight tolerance. Raise it slightly to sweep those up, or crop the corners off afterwards.
The result is a real cut-out
Alpha is set to zero where the plate was, so the glyph keeps its own anti-aliased edges and drops onto any surface without a halo.
