What a trim finds that a crop cannot
It finds the edges itself
The tool reads the four corners to work out what the margin is made of, then walks inward row by row until it hits something different. You never specify a rectangle — the content decides where the crop lands, which is what makes it one click instead of four sliders.
Transparent or a flat colour
If the corners are fully transparent, transparency is what gets trimmed. If they are instead all the same colour, that colour is what gets trimmed. This is why one tool covers both "remove the transparent padding" and "remove the white border" without asking you which you meant.
Tolerance, and why it matters
A scanned white border is never one exact white, and a JPEG one is noisier still. Tolerance sets how far from the corner colour a pixel can drift and still count as margin. Raise it when a border survives; lower it if the trim is eating into the artwork.
Leaving some back
The margin slider gives real pixels back after the trim, clamped to what the image actually had. It never invents padding — if you want more than the original carried, add it afterwards with the padding tool.
A uniform image is left alone
If every pixel matches the corners there is no content to keep, so the image comes back untouched rather than as a one-pixel sliver. A tool that silently destroys the file is a worse answer than one that does nothing.
