Why icons make the cleanest stamps
Already halfway there
Most icons are a single flat colour on transparency, which is already the structure of a stamp. The threshold mainly removes anti-aliasing and normalises the ink, so the cut-off can sit very high — 210 is a sensible start.
Anti-aliasing is the thing being removed
The soft grey pixels around a glyph make it look right on screen and wrong on a die. Thresholding hardens them into ink or nothing, which is exactly what a cutter or a screen needs.
Thin strokes are the risk
An outline-style icon at a small export size can lose its thinnest strokes when the anti-aliasing is hardened away. Work from the largest export you have, not a 24-pixel one.
Ink colour is the whole design
With no shading left, colour is the only variable. Red for urgency, black for authority, green for approval — the icon carries the meaning and the ink carries the tone.
Stays transparent throughout
A transparent icon in gives a transparent stamp out, so it drops onto a document or a label without a box behind it.

Filled beats outline
Outline glyphs rely on thin strokes that anti-aliasing is holding together. Thresholding removes that support and the stroke can vanish.
Start from the biggest export
A 512-pixel icon thresholds cleanly; a 24-pixel one loses detail it never had room for. Scale down afterwards, never before.
Let the ink carry the tone
With no shading left, colour is your only remaining variable. Match the convention: red urgent, black official, green approved.
