What a faded logo is actually for
Real transparency, not a lighter colour
Lowering opacity scales the alpha of every pixel, so whatever sits behind genuinely shows through. Picking a paler version of the logo colour instead bakes the result in and looks wrong the moment the background changes.
Where to set it
Fifteen to thirty percent works over busy photographs, and eight to fifteen over flat or pale backgrounds. Above about forty the logo stops being a watermark and starts being the subject.
PNG or nothing
JPG has no alpha channel, so a faded logo saved as JPG loses its transparency and arrives with a solid white box. The output here is always PNG for that reason.
A mark, not a lock
A watermark signals ownership and discourages casual reuse. It does not prevent it — anyone determined can crop or paint it out. Treat it as attribution rather than protection.
One file, every background
Because the transparency is real, the same export sits correctly on a white page, a dark deck, and over a photograph. There is no need for a separate version per surface.
