Lifting a signature off a photographed page
Keep the darkest thing on the page
On a signed page the ink is almost always the darkest element. Setting the cut-off just above the paper keeps the signature and deletes everything lighter — the sheet, the shadow and usually the printed line beneath it.
The line under the signature
A printed rule is usually lighter than pen ink, so a well-placed cut-off drops it automatically. If it survives, nudge the cut-off down slightly — and if that starts eating the signature, crop above the line instead.
Shadows are the real enemy
A phone photo of a page held in one hand carries a brightness gradient across the sheet. No single cut-off separates a gradient from ink, so one corner keeps paper while the other loses strokes. Photograph flat, in even light.

165 suits a normal ballpoint on white paper. Lower it for pale or pencil signatures; raise it if grey paper texture is coming through as speckle.

Getting a clean extraction
Crop first, always
A tight crop around the signature removes most of the lighting variation before the threshold ever sees it. This one step fixes most bad results.
Even light beats more pixels
A modest photo in flat light extracts better than a high-resolution one with a shadow across the page. Gradients are the failure mode, not resolution.
Crop above a stubborn rule
If the printed signature line will not drop out, crop it away rather than lowering the cut-off until your strokes start to break.
