Why scanned signatures come out crooked
Any angle, not just quarter turns
A page fed slightly askew is out by two or three degrees, not ninety. The slider covers the full range one degree at a time, so you can correct the small tilt that is actually the problem.
The canvas grows to fit
Rotating a rectangle needs a bigger rectangle to hold it, so the canvas expands and the new corners are transparent. Nothing is cropped off, which matters when the signature already runs close to the edge.
Rotation costs a little sharpness
Any angle that is not a multiple of ninety degrees has to resample the pixels, which softens edges very slightly. It is invisible at one pass and starts to show if you rotate repeatedly, so get it right in one go rather than nudging back and forth.
Transparency survives
A transparent signature stays transparent, and the fresh area created around the rotation is transparent too, so the file still drops cleanly onto a document.
Straighten first, then crop
Correct the angle before cropping. Cropping first means the rotation adds transparent wedges inside the frame you just chose, and you have to crop a second time.
